Everyone should have access to clean drinking water, it’s a basic human need. Good luck to all the runners, and I am grateful for everyone who is working or volunteering their time to help out other people.

About Run For Water 2019

Hello and welcome to my fundraising page!

My name is Malia. I currently live in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and work as a Paediatric RN.

How many of you played in sprinklers growing up?  Washed cars in the driveway? Watered plants with a garden hose? I grew up on a farm doing all of these things as well as filling bathtubs every morning for the animals to drink out of.  All of these things I did with safe, drinkable, well water. The fact is, that as fortunate North Americans we often don't think about our use of water because it is so accessible to us. We don't even have to worry about whether or not running water is safe to drink, because if it isn't their will be sign posted.

In 2018 a friend of mine joined Run for Water and travelled to Ethiopia. I was in for a real reality check when she returned with photos of the water that some individuals are forced to drink every day. While I am here forgetting to turn off the tap while brushing my teeth, young people and women are walking hours to fill large plastic containers with brown, dirty, unhealthy water for their families to live off of. This sick feeling formed in my stomach. It seemed so wrong. Not only did it cause me to think seriously about how much I waste and take advantage my access to clean water, but I knew I wanted to do something to help if I could.

This year I have joined Run for Water. Myself and my friends, and the rest of the team will be planning fundraising activities and participating in various races across the Lower Mainland this year to raise money towards our goals. Any support you can provide would be so greatly appreciated.

  With love,
  Malia xo
