About Christie Fehlauer- Clean Water for Bekyye

I love getting students excited about the Run For Water initiative! Getting kids involved and giving them ownership to coordinate school runs, plan and put on school-wide assemblies and fundraisers gives them joy in knowing that they have helped to create a better world for someone else. Because every human has the right to clean water. In many areas of Ethiopia, the freshwater is there, someone just needs to help them access it. 

Run for Water has been empowering and inspiring students to be global citizens in the Abbotsford School District for over 12 years. I have been supporting their initiative for the past 11 years in the middle schools that I have worked in. 

For years I have wanted to travel with the Run For Water team to see first hand what all of our hard work has gone towards. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to travel to Bekyye, Ethiopia this November along with my teaching partner to inaugurate two separate water systems. 

Bekyye is located in the Harana Buluk area of Oromia. Their current population is 2,200 individuals and they have no access to clean water. They are currently using the water from the river and ponds for cooking, cleaning, drinking and animal care. 

Residents in Bekyye, are already working hard to raise 10% of the project costs so children do not have to walk for hours to get water that is full of bacteria and disease. By creating community ownership and teaching the residents how to maintain the system Run For Water is helping to create sustainable projects for many years to come. 

At Run for Water, we are so proud to say 100% of your donation goes directly to the projects on the ground in Ethiopia.   Please join me in raising the remaining 90% of the project cost to bring clean water to Bekyye.
